What is an NT Scan?

Understanding the Nuchal Translucency (NT) Ultrasound

An NT scan is a specialised first-trimester ultrasound that measures the fluid behind the baby’s neck known as the nuchal translucency measurement. This scan helps to identify the risk of certain genetic conditions early in pregnancy.

It is a key part of prenatal screening and can guide further testing for better pregnancy care.

When is the best time?

NT scans are ideally done between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy, when the baby’s crown-rump length is between 45 mm and 84 mm.
Missed the NT window? The next-best option may include NT ultrasound near you combined with NIPT or second-trimester anomaly scans.

What to expect during the scan?

Preparation & Procedure

There is no need to fast. A moderately full bladder helps to provide clear imaging during the scan.

During the Scan

The NT scan is painless and takes around 15 to 30 minutes. It is completely non-invasive and performed by our expert team in fetal medicine.

After the Scan

You will receive a detailed report. Based on results, we may advise further tests such as NIPT, CVS, or amniocentesis.

Explore the NT scan procedure as part of your complete prenatal ultrasound journey.

Interpreting NT results

If the nuchal translucency measurement is within the normal range, it is a good sign. A higher measurement may indicate an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities.

Your doctor may recommend additional testing like NIPT, chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis to confirm.
